Curl Definition

Ok, like most folks with insanely curly, kinky hair there usually comes the desire to tame the mane and knock out the frizz, but at the same time, keep your curls from turning into a glued- together mass of fuzzy cement - yuck. I mean lets face it - gel is awesome at defining curls, but after it dries, depending on what type of gel you are using - ouch - dry, hard, crunchy - yet defined curls - but is it worth it?:p.

Anyway, I have yet to find the perfect product that will define my curls, but not dry my hair as  hard as shellac. I know there is always the option of scrunching the crunch - tried it. But my hair takes a long time to dry , and typically you should wait until your hair is completely dry before you try to scrunch the crunch. If you don't wait until it's completely dry, you run the risk incorporating the same ol' frizz  back into your hair that you were trying to get rid of in the first place.

I have tried the clear ecostyler, which I have to admit works nice to define my curls, but again - there's the crunch factor. And I've tried applying olive oil and other leave-ins underneath the ecostyler, but I still get a mass of crunch, so I'm not sure what to do.

I've also tried Long Aid Activator, which dries soft, but I still get some frizz. Now, I recognize that frizz is simply the nature of my hair, but I can definitely eliminate essentially all of my frizz with ecostyler, so what I want is something like ecostyler, but without the crunch. Hmmmm, here's a thought...maybe I should try combining the Long Aid Activator underneath the ecostyler...hmmm - I've never done that before. ( ok -I'll experiment with that and report back).

Anyway, I'm on a mission to find this magic product - if it even exists. This past weekend I made two purchases - one to Qhemet Biologics for the Honeybush Tea Soft Gel and the other Curls by Sister Smith Wet Set Pudding. I' ve heard great things about both, so we shall see how they turn out.

Once they are here, I'll give them a try and report back - hopefully I can get some pictures of both on my hair, so you can see the difference between the two.

The only two gels that seem to give me hold/definition without the crunch or drying my hair out are KCCC and Lustrasilk Styling gel. Not sure what I'm doing right or wrong with the KCCC since seems like everyone else complains about it drying crunchy but except for an occasional spot it drys soft with me. I think I could deal with the crunchies but it's the super drying affect that most gels seem to have on my hair, even when they have no alcohol, that I can't handle. Most leave my hair feeling so brittle that I'm sure it's about to snap off at any moment.

I like the kccc, but it didn't have enough hold for me back when I tried it. The thing is - I used it pretty sparingly so maybe now that I know how to apply my gels, I might have to revisit it.

It's sooo expensive though, which is why I tend to purchase other products instead. I know what you mean about drying the hair out though - have you tried using a good leave-in underneath? I use some of my VO5 mixed with honey and EVOO underneath my ecostyler and it keeps my hair in pretty good shape.

Also, I just discovered avocado butter as a deep conditioning treatment thanks to Maria and Hippychic. This also keeps the gel from doing too much drying out of my hair.
